Variations on Standard Brillianteering of Round Brilliant Diamonds

چکیده

process — cutters sometimes use “painting” or its opposite “digging out” to improve weight retention. However, these processes can affect the face-up appearance of a diamond, particularly its contrast pattern. Figure 1 (top) illustrates a round brilliant diamond before this last polishing step, which includes the fashioning of the stars and the halves (also called the upper girdle and lower girdle facets) that produce the final girdle profile. Figure 2 shows a girdle profile with “standard” brillianteering (no painting or digging out). The average thickness of the girdle at the bezel-main junctions is about equal to its thickness at the upper and lower half junctions (that is, distance B is equal to distance A).While distance A is largely determined during the initial planning stage, distance B can be determined during the final steps of polishing as it is solely the result of the upper-half and lower-half facet polishing. Painting is produced by shifting the upper-half or lower-half facet positions in relation to the bezels or pavilion mains so that there is less definition between them. Because the half facets are anchored at the point of the star facets or the junction of the pavilion mains, G E M O L O G Y

Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectra of faceted diamonds.

Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy has been employed for characterization of faceted diamonds. ATR spectra of round brilliant cut natural diamonds of approximately 0.1 ct were observed with excellent spectral quality. The mirror-flat spectrum of the table facet enables a good contact to the ATR crystal with a minimal applied pressure. The observed AT...

Assessing culet and girdle in standard round brilliant diamonds at the GIA Laboratory

ulet size and girdle thickness are important elements in the Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) new Diamond Cut Grading System, as they can affect evaluations of the face-up appearance and design aspects of overall cut quality (see figure 1).This article reviews the criteria and methods used by the GIA Laboratory to assess culet and girdle, explains their role in the new cut grading syste...

Understanding Diamond Pricing Using Unconditional Quantile Regressions

This paper investigates the relationship between the selling price of diamonds and their weight in carats. For this purpose, we use a unique sample of 112,080 certified diamonds collected from www.info-diamond.com during the first week of July 2011. We find substantial differences in pricing depending on cut shape. The price of diamonds increases markedly with the carat weight, with a price ela...

Simultaneous Determination of Brilliant Blue FCF and Carmoisine in Food Samples by Aqueous Two-Phase System and Spectrophometric Detection

A novel, simple and more sensitive spectrophotometric procedure has been developed for the determination of Brilliant blue FCF and Carmoisine in food samples by an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS). After extraction, the absorbance values were measured at 527 and 632 nm for Carmoisine and Brilliant blue FCF, respectively. The effects of different parameters such as, polyethylene glycol (type and ...
